timing belt change on 1990 240 Manual transmission 200

I plan to change the timing belt on my 1990 240 DL which had M47 manual transmission . I will be doing it first time . I have read FAQ or brickboard for this procedure. I am concerened about Securing the Crankshaft While Removing the Center Bolt. All the procedure which use other than special tool 5284 seem to be not applicable in my case. So is this tool madatory for doing this . Is there no way around without damaging anything .
Why does one need to hold flywheel or such things when car is in the gear . Crankshaft can not move if the car is in gear. What are your suggestions

If the tool is necessary then from where I can buy it at lowest price.
Thanks and Regards
Gopesh
