960 Wagon mileage and moaning rear

Hey there all.
I'm still looking for a wagon and came across a 1997 960. 90,00 miles. Well kept. Visors flop. drink holder broken, otherwise nice.
Herad a little groaning, noise from right rear when accelerating from slow speed, especially up hill. A grinding or groaning...???
Was all set to have my mechanic check it out when I asked seller about gas mileage.
The estimate was 13 mpg around town???
I was expect to hear 18...?
Original owners and really good folks.
Any thoughts?
