1990 760 gle ignition key wont turn!!!!!!!!!!! 700

Ive got a problem with the ignition key suddenly refusing to turn in my 1990 760 gle.
Ive managed to strip off the cowling at the top of the column, and reveal the key barrel,but I cant see how to get the barrel out to release the steering lock.(Volvo certinly isnt ford)
Looking in the faq, I gather that drilling the barrel out is the way to go, now the the ignition key will not turn.But is releasing the steering lock as simple as just drilling the barrel.
Can anyone guide me, with perhaps a few pictures, on how to go about this as the car is upsetting the owner of the pub where it is stranded.
