M46 Gear shift lever removal question 700 1991

The shift lever ball is held onto the mechanism under the car by a round metal collar with bushings and snap rings underneath. The collar looks like 2 large washers pressed together. After prying at them, I can't see how to separate the two halves to release the shift lever.

Ideas??
