engine shakes 200 1987

Hey,
My '87 240 sedan has a bad case of the shakes when I slow down at lights or stops. It isn't the brakes, because if I slow down, by downshifting, I still experience an engine that feels like it is ready to jump out from the hood. Is this a problem with the engine mounts? How do I check the condition of these, if that is the case? I wonder why I wouldn't have problems with this at higher speeds. Any other ideas are appreciated.
