Electrical question 200 1986

I trying to find out if there is a short somewhere on my son's car. I thought that if you disconnected the negative terminal from the battery and measured the voltage across the battery negative and the disconnected wire a reading of 12 volts indicated a short. I tried this on my good car and it also read 12 volts. What is the best way to search for a short?
