It turns out that I had a spare FP Relay in my assorted spare parts bag. So I put it in. At the same time, I replaced the corroded 25 AMP FI fuse in the "weather-proof my a$$" fuse holder. The verdict?? Hard starts went away. I was hopeful for no more hesititation, but the first straightaway I found proved that wrong. Stomping the gas the to floor made the car take off and lurch, just like before.
Halfway through the trip (less than 5 miles from where it happened coming the other direction, by the way), the car staleld again. This time, however, I paid more attention. It wasn't a true "stall". The car simply lost power at the gas pedal. RPMs would simply drop to idle with the engine continuing to run. Once the car stopped, I put it in 1st and tried to go again, it would stall. It sounds to me like the idle air control valve is working fine, but maybe the throttle position sensor is going bad? I hit the gas, the throttle opens, but the ECU doesn't know that the engine needs more fuel because the sensor is shot. Lots of air, nothing to burn with it. Car lurches.
So tomorrow, I'm going to resolder both relays (the old one came with the car and has been resoldered at least twice. The new one has 2001 stamped on the side.) If this doesn't solve the problem, what else could be possible? If I'm on the right track, how would one test the theory?
