Forgive me -- it's just one of those times (after a great relief) when you want to shout with glee to everyone!
Actually, this '84 has always passed NJ Inspection (on the dynomometer, ASM5015) on the first try, but this time I was worried: the exhaust has a rattling sound, like marbles, and after crawling under and confirming that there wasn't anything loose along the pipes, I assumed that my catalytic converter had congealed into loose "marble" pellets and was useless. So with trepidation (more than usual), I went through the lineup today -- I figured the 90+ (F) temperature would help keep whatever was left of the cat nice and hot while I waited on line (engine running, of course).
Anyway, the old girl passed, and rather well (viz., emissions) I have to admit, as nothing was even a close call! When the guy gave me the yellow sticker (good for two more years), I exclaimed "She passed", and he asked, "Surprised?", to which I answered, "Well, she is getting old.", to which he said, "Yeah, I was surprised, too."
Anyway, here's my records (for both this time and two years ago):
GAS STANDARD READING
Today (at 215,925 miles)
NOx 1227 181
HC 162 21
CO% 0.91 0.12
CO2% n/a 15.0
In 2004 (at 193,289 miles)
NOx 1227 33
HC 162 27
CO% 0.91 0.02
CO2% n/a 14.7
So the main changes over the past two years (and 22,000 miles) are that my NOx went up from 33 to 181 (probably the Cat really is going south) and the CO% went up from 0.02 to 0.12. Interesting that both increased approximately six-fold.
It's also interesting that the HC went down, from 27 to 21. That's good, at least.
Thanks all, for "listening" :-)
