Intermittent heavy growling type vibration in driveline 700 1988

A couple of weeks ago the 88 765 started making a loud, deep growling noise and vibration which felt much like the exhaust was hitting the frame. I checked all of that and eliminated it along with the AC compressor, electric fans, etc., as causes. The noise is intermittent and comes or goes either at idle or while driving then everything smooths out. Although the trans is still shifting smoothly, I am suspecting a torque convertor, but have never had one fail so don't really know if that could be it or not.

If anyone has some experience with a similar problem, I would appreciate the input.

Regards,
