Strong gas fumes under hood 900 1996

I can smell strong gas fumes under the hood and inside the car while my air conditioner is on. (I do not smell the fumes as much when the A/C is on recirculation.) Sometimes the smell is quite overpowering and I have to turn off the A/C and open the windows for fresh air. My mechanic has checked this out several times now and cannot find any leaks in the fuel line, but he does think it could be due to some dampness around an injector. Should I replace the injector seals or should I check out some other possible cause?
