84, 245 automatic trans; first gear to second very rough, possible broken spring? 200 1984

my 245 shifts horribly from first to second, loud noise and thump just when transmission goes from first to second. all other gears fine. i was told a broken spring in the tanny was the culprit. is it possible to replace the broken spring with one from another 240? I was told the springs are under the tranny filter. has anyone ever done this? help! please
