Thought I was going to have to call for a tow..... 200 1986

Yesterday on my way back home from work, I got in a construction line that lasted for about about 5 miles, but took me about 45 minutes to get through. It was about 95 degrees outside and I had my a/c on along with my aux pusher fan on for that extra bit of air flow. The temp gauge was normal for the first 30 min, but then started to creep up to mid way between the 9 o'clock and the bottom of the red line. 10 min later, the car started to shake and then shortly after that, stalled. It did this about 20 times over the next 1/2 mile and 15 minutes until traffic started moving. Between playing with the brake, babying the gas and putting it in and out of neutral to keep it going, I made it home. My entire cooling system is new and in excellent condition, but now what would have caused my car to buck and stall like it did? It's never had to sit in traffic that long, but all was well once I was up to 20 mph and up.

Thanks for any thoughts or input.
