what's involved in an oil pan gasket replacement for a 93 245?

I think I've ID'ed the oil leak in my 93 245 as the oil pan gasket. The rear cam plug is clean and there's no oil inside the auto trans bellhousing or behind what Bentley call the transmission brace (cast aluminum cover at rear of engine). Breather box and all hoses are clean. I know its engine oil and not trans fluid as I put some fluorescent dye in the oil and the whole underside of the oil pan, trans, and floor around it glows (but not the inside of the bellhousing). Cleaned it all up and it looks like it's the oil pan.

I've read different accounts of what's involved in changing the oil pan gasket and would like to know if removing the pan is necessary or if it can be done by removing the oil pan bolts and replacing the gasket in place?

If not, does the crossmenber have to be dropped? Is it better to lift the engine from above or from below? Thanks.
