Hi all,
I replaced my son's 944 A/C compressor, accumulator and orifice tube about a month ago. It was good and cold for a few weeks, then exhibited the following odd behaviour. First, it would not work on the freeway. It appeared to work OK in town. THen, it started cooling only when the fan speed was set to 5. I opened the hood and watched the compressor when the fans speed was set to 2 and it was not quite engaging the clutch. It would sort of turn but it was not fully engaged.
I measured the volts at the wire going to the compressor and was getting 12V only on fan speed 5. It was progressively less at each lower fan speed with 1 being about 3 volts.
I assume that the compressor should get 12V no matter what fan speed is selected.
Shortly after I ran that test, my wife drove the car about 50 miles with the A/C on and the fan set to 4. Since then, no A/C. THe compressor does not engage no matter what. Voltage is the same at the fan speeds. THe compressor will not engage even if I jump the wire to the positive terminal of the battery, making me think that she may have ruined the compressor.
What is going on?
ANy help appreciated,
Frank
