Classic brickboard RE TPS 700

90 740T

My ideal brickboard adventure - sort of.

My idle's been rough, low, and odd for a long time. Worse in heat, worse with the AC, adjusted by mechanics (shouldn't be), and the vacuum from my intake about sucked in my hand. The IAC was cleaned and functioned in the self-diagnostic and in R and D (AT) to raise the idle. This led me to the TPS.

Since my car stalled on my last week and embarrassed me in front of my girlfriend...
After about half an hour of befuddlement in 110 F heat (plus my car had been running with the AC), I surmised my TPS was bad. The only two pins installed in my car (I assumed because the third WOT pin was unnecessary) made no difference when I shorted them and had no current. Also, running an ohmmeter across the two leads did nothing. I assumed my TPS at least was dead and maybe my ECU was not giving the leads power (oh goody).

BOY was I wrong. Any I'm happy I was.

The two leads I assumed were for idle were for the WOT switch - the lead for the idle was broken off in the boot. Turbos don't power the WOT switch as it's an NA development for more power. Poor non-turbos ;)
I was at PnP today picking up the spool/TB linkage (which I broke testing my TPS) and tested two other TPS's. Neither had the idle connection! They weren't possibly both bad - and both had 3 pins on the connector boot.

Come to find out the idle contacts are the two farthest from the top of the TB NOT the other two. My third lead broke in half (it's wires are shorter than the other two). The idle pin is receiving voltage, and I need to now buy a $7 part from the dealer (and lengthen the wires).

Since the front page mentions fixing a possibly expensive problem for under $10, I figured the info RE the pins should be added to the FAQ (AFAIK it's absent) - if only for other noobs who don't consider the rotation of the TB.

-Will

PS on a side note, my EGR temp sensor hunt went badly today - I was teased by two that had EGR but didn't seem to have temp sensors. I didn't feel the valve, but my eyes said no. I had to go visit someone in the hospital after the PnP run, and didn't want greasy fingers. Thursday I'm making a run to Stockton and Sacto for the PnP's there. Happy bricking.
