steering column on 760 gle v6 1990 estate. 700 1990

I ve just got around to replacing the steering column on the old 760 estate, after the key refused to turn forcing me to apply a bit of brute force, to voiding having to sleeping in it...............
I got the replacement column through this morning. But Ive run into bit of a problem with the column being different from the replacement unit. The old columns drive shaft, that attaches to the universal joint in the engine bay is a good 3/4inch longer than the replacement one.
Both part numbers are the same.
I have had the guy at the breakers where I got the column, measure the length of the drive shaft from the donor car ,which goes from the bulkhead to steering rack. This is longer by roughly 3/4inch compred to the one on mine.
has anyone come across this problem before, with identical part numbers but different drive shaft lengths any ideas?
I live in the uk if this might have have any bearing on volvo models supplied here.

part no on the column is 1359191
