a question about the operation procedure for air conditoning on the 240's 200

my friend's mechanic told her to always turn the ac switch off when she turns the car off...is that standard procedure to put less strain on the engine when it is started up again?..I just got the ac working on all 3 of our 240's..85 and two 89's so I would like to know the proper treatment of the system...thanks..Kris
