Torque rod bushings 200 1991

Rear Torque rod bushings are bad. I bought new rubber bushings from FCP Groton. I can't get the old ones out. I made up a puller/pusher with plumbing parts and 1/2 in threaded rod. The threaded rod broke because there was that much force required. What advice can someone give me?
