hard cold starts 900 1995

I have a 95 960 inline with 125k miles. you have to try starting it for an insane amount of time before it actually takes, it tries to start but dies, as if it can't idle high enough. there was a guy that posted about a similar problem on his s70 but I didn't see any conclusion. has anybody solved this problem, or have hints as to what could be causing this?
