I have an 88 740 wagon. It came with only one key, which is in less than perfect condition. From a parts car, I have a complete set of locks, with a total of 5 keys (3 "owner", 2 "valet") all of which are in excellent shape. The only problem is that this set is from a sedan. While the door, ignition and glove compartment cylinders appear to be identical, the one for the rear (trunk vs. tailgate) is quite different. There is also no additional cylinder for the rear storage compartment in the wagon.

My question is, primarily, has anyone ever converted a trunk lock cylinder from a sedan to work in a wagon tailgate. Would it require taking the both of them apart and using the tumbler pins from the sedan lock in the wagon outer barrel? If so, can this be done without destroying any crimped fastenings or the like that are difficult if not impossible to reattach solidly.

I am less concerned with the lock for the floor compartment. If I can get it apart (in such a way that it can be reassembled) I can swap tumbler pins around until it works with the new keys. (I've done this before on something else) It may be necessary to leave out a couple of the pins but it will still work without them. Their absence makes picking the lock easier, but I am mainly concerned with being able to latch the compartment, rather than actually lock it.
