Overdrive and reverse 200 1981

I am a newbee and my wife has a 81 240 wagon and she is having trouble with overdrive and reverse (the car not the wife) overdrive works sometimes but reverse is almost not there it barely engages at all. the shop she took it to told her that they need to replaace the overdrive "box" for between $1500 to $2000. Any ideas or helpfull input would be a lot of help. I can do most anythin to a car once I know what to do.
