O2 sensor swap from a 1986 to a 1990 sw 200

I am continuing to "mine" my parts car, a 1986, as the running one, a 1990 240 now has greater mileage than the older one.

The O2 sensor in the 1986 is at the rear of the exhaust manifold and in the 1990 it is in the catalytic converter. I know that there is a lot less mileage on the 1986 sensor than on the 1990 and was wondering ,since a universal sensor is sometimes offered by parts distributors, if I could not put the supposedly better sensor in place of the one in the catalytic converter.

Is the only difference the length of the wires, in which case would crimping and shrink wrap tubing with liquid wire coating for good mesure do the trick?.In both cases the O2 sensors seem to be electrically heated.

Thanks for your input
