Steering column hole with too much venting. 120-130

It seems that the hole for the steering column as it’s going through the firewall is huuuuge. I know it’s like that to accommodate the funny column, but I'm getting blasted with engine heat and smell.
I tried an old used bushing, which fit nice and blocked out the unwanted elements, but messed up the steering.
Any crafty ideas out there on plugging up that hole yet keeping the necessary steering integrity?
