Climate control panel failing? 700 1991

Hi all:

Thanks to everyone who helped out with my broken sway bar link last week on my 91 740. It's fixed and good as new!

I also have a problem with the climate control unit (3 knob system). When the car is switched off and then back on, the air will come out of the floor vents, which I've been able to fix each time by turning the control knob to defrost and slowly back down to the main dash level, where I usually keep it.

I figured it was a vacuum problem; but today my little trick of switching to defrost and then back didn’t seem to work as well, and also, the a/c off switch no longer turns the a/c off. I looked at the FAQ's about resoldering the circuit board…do these symptoms sound like those of cracked solder, or does anyone have other ideas?

Also, are their any tricks to getting the vacuum lines off the back of the control panel?
Any advice would be appreciated as I'm a novice (I'd even have to buy a soldering iron). Thanks in advance for your help!
