1991 240 Wo'nt Start 200

Help! I was leaving work last week and my 240 just died on me as I was leaving the parking lot. I had put gas in it just prior to coming to work. Once before this happened to me after I had come close to running out of gas. After I had put gas in it and had driven abot1/4 mile, it just died and after a few minutes of pumping the gas pedal and trying to restart, it started and ran fine until this last episode about a week later. Fortunately I was not on the interstate or in heavy traffic when the car just decided to quit. The battery seems to have a good charge and the electrical components are strong. Fuse #6 is fine(I thought that this might have been the problem). The starter turns fine, but the car will not start. I tried pumping the gas pedal thinking that it may have a void in the fuel line where the gas had not made it from the fuel tank
Any thoughts on what is going on? I would hate to be going along on the interstate at about 80 mph, in the left lane, and have this happen to me. Also, can someone suggest a good, clear, straight-forward repair manual for aspiring do-it-yourselfers like myself. I would like to start staying away from the mechanic as much as I possibly can(I need to try and do a brake job now by myself to save some money, but am somewhat timid about even trying).
One more thing. This is an excellent site and I would like to make a plug in encouraging you to put something in the "tip jar" if you have not already made a $$contribution to keep the site going. Thanks!
