96 960 with trouble starting 900

This morning (after car sat all night) my 96 960 had some trouble starting. It started to turn over and had some crazy rapid clicking sound coming from behind the ashtray. On the 2nd try, it started, but this noise was still there. I shut the car off and let it sit for 30 seconds. I re-started and it started just fine and the noise was gone. It was fine the rest of the day.

Battery is new and checked OK
Alternator checked out great on a load and voltage test.
Car has 120K and great maintainence history.

Any ideas?
