I had a pretty good day at the pick-and-pull yesterday-- part of the haul was a set of front calipers with brand new pads that would fit my '92 945T.

When I got them home I discovered that one bottom caliper slide pin was completely seized in its bore. After lubing it up well I was able to work the rubber boot off over the head of the pin. I soaked the pin with lots of P'Blaster and after that I applied heat liberally with my propane torch. At that point I could get the pin to turn a millimeter or two in either direction in the bore by using a 20mm open end wrench. I couldn't get it to move any more than that, and I was worried I would break it off if I applied brute force.

I rethreaded the 12mm retaining bolt into the pin and held the bracket to the garage floor with my foot and used my air impact gun with the regulator dialed down to hit the 12mm bolt with short bursts of clockwise impact. Soon the pin was spinning easily in the bore. I put an open end wrench behind the head of the pin and pulled up on the wrench while spinning the 12mm nut clockwise with the air impact gun. The pin came right out. I used the impact gun and wrench to spin the pin in and out to clean up the bore some more. Soon it was sliding freely like the other pin.

I gave all the slider pins and their bores a quick spray with brake cleaner and re-lubed them with silicone grease. So for $30 I have a pair of perfectly serviceable calipers in my parts stash for the day when I need them...
