I'm trying to find my fuel pump relay to do delivery & other tests. My '82 GL was mf'd. in October 1981, so it falls between the usefulness of the Haynes manaul, which has almost nothing about relays, & the Bentley manual which describes a couple possible locations. Here's what I've found thus far: on the left fender in the eng. compartment, there's a small silver relay next to the big silver headlamp relay. It has terminals 30 & 87, which correspond to Bosch relay terminals described in Bentley, also the same terms. that I used to test the FI in my '84 BMW. When I jump these terms w/a switch, I get some noise from the injectors, but no fuel flows. It almost sounds like when I did the BMW, except no gas comes out. So I re-checked Bentley & found the possible spot of relay under the glovebox, behind the rt. bottom kick panel, under the FI control unit. The terminals aren't labelled, but there are some wires of similar colors as described in Bentley. I jumped the most obvious choice & nothing happened, that I no of. Definitely no gas, no noises, no apparent adverse reactions. (Kinda scary though) After this bit of frustration I decided to re-check the tank pump for amps, as it's my primary suspect in the case of engine cutting out occasionally. The amp level was twice that described as normal in Bentley, + there's no sound of it working when the engine's running. (It was running at the start of these tests, w/a normal amp load, but I chalked this up to intermittent failure, which was what I experienced on the road. I could drive w/no probs for miles on the freeway, but then I'd make a left uphill turn & the engine would cough & a couple times die, w/a groaning sound coming from what seemed to be the main fuel pump.) So, my question is, now that I'm about to install the IPD tank pump upgrade kit, where is my fuel pump relay & is there anything I've missed in my attempts to override the ignition system for testing the fuel delivery system? Thanks in advance.
