240 AC Switch capilary tube? 200

This weekend I replace the blower motor in an 88 240 DL. What a hellish job...

I was 90% complete, just putting everything back together, when I got to the A/C switch / control unit. It has a tube attached to it which I was trying to be very careful with - but in the final steps of putting that back into the dash, the copper tube cracked, & let out a hissing sound for a few seconds.

This can't be good.

What exactly does this tube do? How can I fix it? Can I solder the crack shut? JB Weld? Chewing gum???

What leaked out? My guess is that I've just created a vacumn leak - or was that refrigerant?

HELP!

Paul

(PS: The AC wasn't working anyhow, but I was hoping to fix that soon...)
