Rear KYB Gas Adjusts don't mesh with front bilstiens

Just replaced cheap Carquest shocks on the rear of my 91 240 wagon. There is no compression in these shocks compared to the Bilstien HD's I have on the front.Much less control and more bounce in the rear now. Hate to say it but I preferred the ride with the conquests. Has anyone had a similiar problem mixing these shocks? Perhaps new springs would help Or should I just replace the KYB's with bilsteins?`
