Keyless entry, car alarm don't work 900 1996

I noticed that the LED does not flash on my 1996 965 when I lock the car and the keyless entry does not work. I bought the car in May and this was the case at that time. As a test yesterday I locked myself in the car and then opened the door and did not trip the alarm. I have the green Volvo general wiring diagram manual and all indications point to the alarm relay, but I don't know how to confirm that. Does anyone have experience with this system and how to diagnose? Also does anyone know of a cost-efficient source for relays? Thanks for your help! John
