Struggling with no start of ’88 745 GLE, 5-speed, 245K. Initial problem: started it up in my driveway, it would idle fine, but when gave throttle, it would stumble to a point, but if I got it to rev up it would stay reved. I assumed I needed to look at intake air system for leakage/problems. Found a leak at one of the joints of the intake hose between AMM and throttle body. Repaired that leak (and cleaned throttle body)– figured I has solved it. Nope – wouldn’t start at all for several tries – acted like it would try occasionally. I pondered, checking all my work. After jumping the fuel pump relay socket, it did start once (relay back in place), still stumbling some, but I braved a ride around the block to see how it would behave. Noticed some loss of power when accelerating. Later would not start at all – regardless of jumping the fuel pumps. I read lots on brickboard/swedishbricks. Tried to listen for in-tank fuel pump-nothing I could be sure of. Other fuel pump seemed merrily pumping along. I ended up replacing the pre-pump, but no change. I get plenty of fuel out of the regulator bypass. I don’t have any way to check fuel pressure. I can hear (with screwdriver) ticking of the injectors during cranking. Radio suppression relay seems to work. I checked for spark and it seems OK. I tried spraying ether, but no detectable explosions. Aux air-valve has an electrical vibration (like a hum, but not noisy – can feel it). I want to check the crankshaft sensor but I can’t find it (do I have one? Where is it?). I disconnected the FPRegulator from the fuel rail – fuel leaked, but not under much pressure (it was 24 hrs after last attempted start).
Would love some brickboard guidance with further troubleshooting. I want to try another FPR, but don’t want to just waste my money like I must have on the pre-pump.
Thanks in advance – Doug
