Front Engine Oil Leak 200

Yesterday, I noticed an unhealthy amount of oil sitting under my car after parking for about 10 minutes. I begin taking things apart to see if I could drive it home, or needed a tow. The latter was the case, with the following indicators: Oil is leaking out from the bottom section of the timing belt cover. Timing belt now has a fine cover of Castrol syntec. (when running the motor with the upper timing cover off, I can see oil droplets thrown up from the lower section, but much more oil was simply draining out through the bottom cover).

Upon consultation of my trusty Bentley, I suspect a front crankshaft oil seal has gone gunnybags. This leads to two questions:

1) Are there other likely culprits in this area to consider?
2) Do I really need VOlvo special tools #5034 and 5283? The former appears to be a socket, and I have a set of deep (metric) sockets, could acquire more if that will work. The oil seal press? What does it look like, and is it truly a needed item, or can a satisfactory substitute be made or otherwise juryrigged?

Thanks for your insights,

Lanval
