ECU troubleshooting 200 1989

Just bought a very well maintained 89 240DL. However it doesn't run, and has been diagnosed w/a possible bad ECU. Everyone I've talked w/doubts that is the problem. Even my Bentley manual sez, the ECU are very reliable. Symptoms, when it does start, include very rough idling and stalling with the least amount of throttle is applied. Most of the time it won't start at all. Self diagnotics for ignition indicates not fault. BUT! I get no codes at all when I check for LH codes. Not even the 1-1-1 "no faults detected code." Is this symtomatic of a "shot" ECU or could there be another cause for this? Difficult to troubleshoot w/out diagnostic codes. Anyone have this issue before?
