I can hear the under-car fuel pump running both at key-on and after I stop the starter. I drove it home about 2 miles, but it was running poorly with a leak in the fuel return hose. I fixed that hose and it will not start now. Pulled the plugs, they are dry and sparking.
I believe the fuel pump(s) are triggered by the ignition system, but apparently the injectors are not opening or there is a blockage. Not much of a blockage though, because fuel was flowing out of the return line quite readily.
I also tried starting it while the return line was pinched off in case there was a lack of pressure. Then the old hose just behind the fuel pressure regulator started leaking past the clamp, so I replaced that hose too.
Next step is a new fuel filter, I guess, but I'm reasonably sure that's not my problem. You gurus ought to have the answer, right?
