My 71' 1800E's transmission is broken? 1800 1971

So, here's my story, I just bought this car, and it drove well when I did. I then proceeded to drive I from where I bought it to my home which is about 200 miles. The trip went fine until I tried to back it into my driveway, where I found that it would not go into reverse. Then I realized that the shifter knob would only stay in the 3rd and 4th side of the linkage, and that the location of 3rd and 4th was way to the left (where 1st 2nd, and rev. should be). I fiddled aroud with it for awhile, and got it to work, but that didn't last long, and now it won't do anything else.
I have taken the car to the mechanic, and he told me that the transmission was broken, and that he could not find the parts to rebuild it. So I guess we are looking for another m41 transmission.
He did take the transmission apart as far as could be without takeing it out, but cannot figure out what is wrong.
Does anyone have any suggestions about what could be wrong and/or a source for transmission parts?
Could there be a relationship between this linkage, and the overdrive? On the trip home, I wass able to get the overdrive to engage only at the end of the trip, and then when I stopped, the linkage was out of wack(technical term)????

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tyler
