940 convertion with 740 tranny 700

just out of curiousity - would a M46 or M47 tranny fit into a 940? As far as i know not a single 940 was imported to the US with manual transmission. Are the 740 and 940 sharing the same transmission/engine?? My 740 is getting old and i'm thinking about getting a newer one, but it has to be with a manual transmission!
