Plastic Headlights & other lenses

I've been seeing more and more cars with fogged or crazed plastic headlights and other lenses.

This is just a reminder that a little Rubbing or Polishing compound will restore them to like-new condition, and an occasional application of ArmorAll or other UV protectant will keep them looking good.

If you have a linen buffing wheel you can chuck into a drill motor, just use some jeweler's compound to buff them clear again. Remember to finish up with rouge (red) compound.

If you're in an area like where I live (desert) that has severe UV damage, you can earn some nice pocket money polishing out headlights for $10 a car.

I have a portable generator I keep in the trunk of my car, but you could probably use a 12V-120V voltage converter to run a drill motor. Invest under $10 to buy linen buffing wheels and a couple of different sticks of compound, and set yourself up as a mobile headlight repair shop. I call myself 'The Headlight Doctor'.

I charge $10 per car and give a year's guarantee. I figure I put in about 15-20 minutes per car, and the cost of materials is negligible, less than $0.10 per car. I can schedule jobs to fit around my own schedule, and I don't have any overhead for a shop.

I also keep a few common bulbs in stock, and sell them for cost, installation free in most cases - it depends on how hard it is to replace them.

Just something to keep me busy, and it also helps people avoid accidents, etc.

Have fun! Steve
