740t 88 mechanic wants $1000+says it needs a new headgasket, how do i tell for sure? 700

this is my friend's car,i did a compression test, the middle two cylinders read 90 and 100 while the two ends were 130 and 120,the car had sat for about an hour cooling down before i got to do the test, the spark plugs were tan and there is no white smoke coming out the tail pipe, the car has 192000 miles,it is leaking a steady drip from the water pump,so i think that is the problem..any suggestions?the mechanic did not do a compression test ,so could he be mistaken?my friend took the car in because the heat gauge went to the red,but i think that was because of the fluid loss via the water pump..how to be sure?just change out the pump and hope for the best?Kris
