1985, automatic, non-turbo wagon
I replaced the engine wiring harness Saturday evening. It went pretty well, and I found the faq and Dave Barton's site to be very helpful. Here are a few observations that might help other newbie brick owners along, especially other 1985-87 owners...
- The new wiring harness was very tight, in that there is no extra slack. I had to be efficient in routing around things, and in many cases take the shortest distance between 2 points. Wiring was particularly tight to the injectors
- Unfortunately I had to cut and splice the small red wire to the alternator. It came with a female spade connector, but my alternator required a ring connector. Damn.
- I almost SHATnered myself after I hooked up the battery, turned the ignition and SH&T! dead starter. Broke out my multimeter -- short story is, my starter solenoid has an extra spade connector on it and I used the wrong one. Moved the connector to the lower one and viola!
- Aside from having solid connections to most of the underhood components now, improvements I notice (coincidental or otherwise) are smoother idle and MUCH smoother, quicker shifting throughout the range (and no I didn't mess with the kickdown cable). Now onto that Oil leak!
