Ok, here are the symptoms on my wife's 84' 240. We have had the car for 7 years and so far I have managed to fix all problems.
Bad rattle coming from the right front end. Also failure to return to center when turning. I have replaced the power steering pump and lines and changed the fluid and bled the system. The power steering is not leaking anywhere. The car drove like a dream for one day, then the heavy steering and the necessity of turning the wheel back to end a turn returned. Time for a rebuilt rack?
The other (related?) problem is the play in the right front, resulting in a nasty rattle/knock whenever a pot hole or rough road is encountered. With the car on the ground, when I reach in over the right front tire and grab the spring and pull in and out their is considerable play and a nasty knock. When I jack the car the noise and play disappear. The ball joint and tie rod end are new (5,000 miles and I checked them also). The problem is not in the wheel bearings (I tightened them all the way, and it had no effect on the noise). Time to replace the Upper Strut Bearing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
