780 gauges fail 700 1990

The fuel gauge and the alternator gauge have quit on my 780 dash (4 cly. turbo). All the others work.The wiring diagram shows them wired in series, and that's as far as I can get. Is it time to pull the dash and solder/tighten, or am I overlooking something obvious? Would also appreciate a refresher on how to test these two gauges from the sending end--- it's been awhile. Thanks very much,
