Need some manual clutch diagnostic help please. 700

After replacing the slave clutch cylinder which was leaking I do not have any tension on the clutch fork. I do not have the clutch engaging when i let my foot off the pedal. I can move the clutch fork by hand but should it not be able to spring back (to the front of the car when the clutch is let go?

I removed the slave piston and pushed the clutch fork by hand towards the back of the car (like when pushing the clutch in). When I let go the clutch fork did not spring forward (like when taking your foot off the clutch).

Am I missing something here -- The car has the original clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing -- 169000 miles. Gave away last week without prior warning except the gears were getting harder to engage especailly first. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks
