Have a new problem which is pretty alarming. This is a 1969 1800S, with the telescoping column (not the 122 kind w/ the pronged fork). The securing "nut" is loose (not the 4 bolt rubber coupler), and I can push the steering wheel in and out about 2 inches on the splines. I'm concerned that it could come away in my hands when I'm driving.
But, the big issue is the best way to tighten the special nut to secure the column on the splines. It has two small indentations which look like they need a special tool to grab it. My thinking is that I could use a pipe wrench (gasp!)to grab the fastener, because I couldn't do it with any other type of wrench. Is this going to chew up the "nut"? Is this car safe to drive, and has anyone else had this issue?
