Question on Auto gearbox operation 900 1992

Hi There,
We have just got a 940 2000cc Turbo auto, 1991 or 1992 model year. We are not sure if the auto gearbox is working as it should and changing into top gear. What should the RPM be at 70 mph? Can anyone tell me if this is a 3 or 4 speed auto box? (The gearstick has 1,2 and D on it-does this mean its a 3-speed auto?)
Also, there is a small button on the side of the auto gearstick (not the big square knob on the top of the stick). What is this button for?

New to Volvos so your help would be greatly appreciated.
