My daughter has a 1987 244 in Baltimore. It was a West coast car until the last 4 years. Four years in Pennsylvania and Baltimore has led to front end damage. The Monroe shop said she needed new shocks on the front. When they changed the shocks the passenger strut assembly fell apart. They welded the tube, installed the new shocks and sent it down the road. Another shop says she needs new strut assemblys, only available at the dealer for big $. I replaced the upper strut mounts before I took it back there 4 years ago. Is the broken strut a common problem? Do the road salts cause problems, or just the bad roads? Any suggestions on best thing to do. Is the driver side probably ready to break also? It is hard for me to understand exactly what they welded, but I believe it was the tube that the shock (cartridge) fits inside of. They said they pulled the strut off the car and the top half stayed on the car. Any suggested shops in East Baltimor/ Essex area for us to have work done. I am thinking about shipping used struts from Oregon and new upper mounts, probably new ball joints, to her to have installed. What is the potential road hazard.
