740 GL 1990 Alternator 700

Replaced the alternator of my 740 gl with a new one. The unit is charging great , although.
The control charging light stays on. I have a solid 13.7 V with engine running.
I did observe a 12V at low rpm , and when I reved a little the voltage jumped tpo 13.7 V and stayed there.
Is it the field that is charged through the control light? Why doesnt it turn off?
I pulled one small spark when I pulled the odometer once, and wonder what I could have damaged.
Thanks in advance for input,
