Last week, before having located a really well-recommended alignment shop, I had another look at the tread wear on the front tires. YOW!
One tire had a wee bit of threads showing, the other was close. So, new tires went on THAT DAY.
Not to say that the alignment no longer needs checking, but the odd "thrum-thrum-thrum" sound is gone. Car rolls straighter and truer, and I am a happier though poorer camper. Ditto for wife.sig - it is her daily driver.
Tires are now all-around stock size, and the same brand (unusual for me). Pirelli P3000. Why? (1) My 1988 244 had Pirellis when we got it in 1998, and we have been pleased with them. (2) My usual tire shop, nearby and inexpensive, is Discount, and they don't handle the brand the 965 had when we got it 25K miles ago - Toyo Proxes, and (3) they do pretty good work and have no fuss about me being in the shop and watching.
Again, I thank all of you that answered my previous questions, and will continue looking for a top-notch alignment shop (my super-best Volvo tech has retired).
Regards,
Bob
