Rear Bushing Job: Spring Removal and Shock Recomendation 200

I'm in the middle of a rear bushing job. I want to take the springs out so I can comfortably get at those "ears" which hold the big bushings using my nice homemade bushing tool. When I try to turn the nut at the bottom of the springs the thing that represents the other end of the bolt the nut is on just turns. How can I loosen (and later on tighten) those nuts? Can I just hack them off with my grinder and put real nuts and bolts in there upon reinstallation?
I'm gonna change the shocks in the back too. Recomendations? It's a wagon, and I'm sure my daughter will never have it loaded up with her friends. Duh!
Thanks.
