I just replaced my rotors a few weekends back and am still frustrated at the apparent lack of available brake pad shims to quiet high-frequency brake squeak.
I replaced the caliper pins, rubber boots, lube (cleaned out deposits with non-chlor brake cleaner, dried before applying new silicone lube from FCP), wheel hubs, and rotors. I burned them in, but had to do one a few days after the other due to some minor problems with the hubs ..hehe. It was much simpler than it appeared, I posted about it.
One caliper pin was stuck and the pad wore unevenly. I considered re-leveling the pad by grinding (laterally to the pad so the rotor would not groove) ut my mechanic advised against it. I didn't really investigate it.
I suspect this is causing my squeal, but today it sounded like the opposite side. Sound is deceptive inside a box (the cabin) so I'm not going to jump to a conclusion.
The pads did NOT come with shims and I haven't seen any for girling pads. There is some corrosion on the pads (not the calipers) and this could be causing squealing ..right?. I plan to replace the brake lines with braided steel (already have them and the fluid), so I'll be getting back into them.
Could I apply the lube directly to the pad (backings)? Is the lube the same for the pins and the pad backs? I didn't want to assume it was, so I used only the 4 oz. container FCP included in the caliper pin kit.
Thanks in advance,
Will
